The Best Place for a Jewish Mind

Frequently Asked Questions
Y How long has the school been operating?

We are proud to have celebrated our 36th anniversary this past year! We are the second oldest Jewish day school in the Bay Area.
Y What grades are taught?

SPHDS is the only Jewish day school in Silicon Valley with continuous programs from preschool through 8th grade.
Y Where is the school located?

At 1030 Astoria Drive in Sunnyvale, centrally located in the heart of Silicon Valley, convenient to highways 85, 280 and 101.
Y How long is the school day?

Preschool children attend 3½ hours a day. Kindergarten children attend 6 hours a day. Elementary and middle school children attend 7 hours a day.
Y Can my two year old come in diapers?

Yes.  See more information about Gan Aviv.
Y Does SPHDS offer day care?

Yes. Day care is available.
Y Are there extracurricular activities?

Yes. SPHDS offers a variety of extracurricular activities and summer programs. In the past, sample activities we have had include chess club, science club, various sports activities, drama club, cooking classes, dance and martial arts.
Y What provisions does the school make for non-English speaking children?

We offer a strong ESL (English as Second Language) program. We have welcomed many Israeli families whose children joined our school speaking little English, and have quickly become proficient. Because we have such a large bilingual population, the transition is made easier for our ESL students.
Y What if my children do not know Hebrew?

SPHDS has an extremely strong Hebrew program. Children are first exposed to Hebrew in the preschool and continue to receive strong Hebrew instruction from Israeli teachers as they progress from grade to grade. For those joining in the grades, we make appropriate provisions to bring them up to speed.
Y What if our family is not religious?

All Jewish children are welcome at SPHDS.
Y Does the strong Judaic program take away from the secular program?

Our secular program covers the full curriculum recommended by the State of California. Beyond learning the specific facts, a large part of education is learning critical thinking. We have found that the rigors of Torah study complement the secular studies to create well-rounded students. In terms of actual results, see the next question for a list of universities that our graduates attend.
Y How does SPHDS compare to the public schools in the area?

SPHDS provides academic excellence with a unique blend of secular, Hebrew and Judaic Studies. Students graduate to successful programs at other private schools, public schools, Yeshivot, and prestigious colleges and universities. For example, recent graduates went on to study at diverse universities such as Stanford, Cornell, Sarah Lawrence, SiAH Yedidya Yeshiva, New York University, U.C. Berkeley, Boston University, and USC.
